HTML and Keystones

Keystone in an arch

On Tuesday we are going to be talking about HTML
HTML is not what I mean when I say “new technology.” If you Google “Introduction to HTML” you get a lot of hits. Most of those hits are over five years old. Holy last century! In Internet years this is ancient and far from new! But the content there is valid and has not been updated because it has not needed to be. But, you see so many hits on this subject because it is important. So, why do I call HTML a “keystone” technology? What is a keystone? Here is a definition:

Keystone – the central building block at the top of an arch or vault.

In old bridges and buildings keystones were used to support complex structures like arches. They had to be strong and precisely measured. Another definition of a keystone is as, “a central cohesive source of support and stability.” HTML is plays a keystone role in the world of web content that is analogous to the role of a keystone in an arch. While the keystone feels the least pressure of any of the stones in an arch, the arch still collapses without it. HTML may not be new or sexy, but knowing at least some of it is vital.
